What Sony camera should I buy?

Episode 1517

Chris from Frisco, TX

Chris has a SONY credit card and he has amassed a bunch of points to use to get a camera. Is the Sony A7 good? Leo loves his Sony A7R II. Great camera. But if you're just a hobbyist who loves to take snapshots, the Sony RX100 is a great point and shoot camera, but it isn't cheap at $1200. And if you have a ton of points, then the RX100 Mk. V is last year's model and it's still a great camera. It really comes down to just how much you want. Since Chris already has an Alpha camera, using the Sony A6000 would probably be a good choice as well.

Sony RX100

Episode 1287

John from Tustin, CA

John needs a camera that will take better video in low light. Leo says that smartphones aren't really known for having good low light performance, but they are getting better. A camera will perform a lot better, especially if it has a larger chip. Full frame 35mm are the best in low light, but it's also a lens speed issue. The lower the f-stop rating, the faster the lens.

Episode 1231

Brian from Tonopah, NV

Brian is going on an around the world cruise and he needs a good camera. Leo says that it's a good idea to get the camera well before he goes on his trip so he can play with it and learn how to use it before he goes. Brian doesn't want to switch lenses and wants a GPS as well. Leo says that if money is no option, the Sony DSC-RX1 is amazing. But at $3,000 it's a very expensive point and shoot. It's got a full frame sensor, so the low light performance will be the best.

What camcorder should I buy?

Sony RX100

Episode 1218

Timothy from Michigan

Timothy wants to know what camcorder should he buy. Leo says that point and shoot cameras have great video recording capabilities now and the Sony RX100 is great. The Olympus OM-D will allow him to have interchangable lenses. But the bottom line is, he'll likely shoot most of his video with his mobile phone anyway. So he shouldn't get a separate camcorder. But what about long shots? Leo says he doesn't really want long video shots.

What camera should I use for taking pictures of paintings?

Episode 1156

Dave from Crystal Lake, CA

Dave is looking for a good camera for taking pictures of paintings. Leo says he'll want a good camera that has a wide angle lens, but he won't want it too wide because it will show some barreling. Detail is even more important, and a great lens makes a huge difference, as does accurate color. A large sensor helps with that. Sensors in camera phones are really tiny. A camera has a larger one and the bigger the lens, the more costly. Ideally, he'll want a full frame sensor.

Episode 1112

Bruce from Irvine, CA

Bruce is a bush pilot in Alaska. He's looking for a good digital camera that's better than a point and shoot, but not the size of a full DSLR. Leo says the best point and shoot right now is the Sony RX100. It's not cheap at $800 for the MKIII, but it has a 1" full frame sensor, an f1.8 24-70 zoom, and it's tiny. So it's easy to use and provides professional results.
