With the fall Apple event only weeks away, rumors persist that Apple plans to eliminate the headphone jack in favor of headphones that use the Lightning connector. Leo says it's been tried before. The Motorola Droid Z didn't have one. Leo says that people want a headphone jack and this is going to be a test of brand loyalty. But Steve Gibson says that using the Lightning connector could pave the way for Apple to add noise cancelling earbuds to the design. It could also transmit data like measuring blood pressure while you're working out.
The talk around tech town is that come March Apple will announce a smaller iPhone, about the size of the iPhone 5s. They will also announce an update to the Apple Watch, but Leo says it will likely come out in September.
Rumors are suggesting that Apple will announce a next generation Apple Watch in March. Leo says that he's not sure what else they can do, except for adding a camera for that true Dick Tracy experience. And that would be crazy.
Rumors are flying that there will be no announcement of a revamped Apple TV tomorrow for Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference. Citing leaks from Apple executives, the New York Times reports that a completely redesigned Apple TV simply isn't ready for prime time.
FoxConn has apparently confirmed the specs for both a 4.7" and 5.5" iPhone. Leo says that's the most credible intel yet. If this is true, the iPhone will be as big as a Galaxy Note. You can bet Leo will buy one if that's the case. There's also talk that Apple is having trouble making them because they want the phone so thin, that they've had to change the manufacturing process yet again.
Using an Android clone that looks like an iPhone, TMZ tried to put forth a series of silly rumors of what iPhone 6 will have, including wireless charging. Leo says that they got fooled by a Chinese clone that uses a heavily modifed version of Android to look like iOS.
YouTuber Marquis Brownlee got his hands on a sample iPhone 6 Sapphire screen and Leo says it's looks quite legit. The screen is extremely wear resistant and you can't scratch it at all. It's also a 4.7" screen which is the largest iPhone screen Apple has produced, if legit. You can watch Marquis' video here.
Jack wants to know when the new iPhone is coming. Leo says the rumors are that the new iPhone 6 will have a larger screen (finally). But they're still just rumors. And Apple never really leaks out dates of when it will come out. If we look to the past on how Apple has released iPhones, we can get a fairly good guess. It's usually around September. There's not much more they can do with it since it's a mature product.
Roger wants to get a Mac Mini, but Apple hasn't upgraded it in a long time (Oct 2012). Leo says that is a common complaint with Mac fans. It's a shame too, because it's very affordable and a great product. It seems like Apple doesn't care about anything but mobile these days. It's like they have a limited attention span. They're all mobile now with iPhones and iPads, and they are less worried about the desktop computing experience. Leo's been hearing rumors for months about a new Mac Mini coming, but nothing has materialized.
Tom likes Windows 8 and saw that Microsoft may be giving away Windows 8.1. Leo heard that and they pretty much give away 8.1 to people who own Windows 8 already. It would be a clever move to do so, but Leo can't really imagine them doing that since Microsoft is a software company, unless they're reinventing themselves again. It just barely passed Windows Vista in market saturation. People just don't trust it because the word went out that Windows 8 is terrible.
