Johnny Jet

Episode 1424

Johnny says that if you fly a lot, enough to gain frequent flyer miles, it's best to stick with a single airline that you can build miles with. But if you fly infrequently, then shop around for the best deal when you do. He also says that if you get asked if you want to upgrade to "premium economy," it's a big scam. Johnny also says that airlines are now charging for gate check-in of luggage at $25 a bag or more. They'll also charge you to print your boarding pass.

Travel Tip - Flying into Seattle offers a very organized and helpful management of Uber and Lyft pickup. There's also wingz.me. What makes them different is that there's no surge pricing. If you prebook, you'll get the same price and you can request the same driver over and over. It's available in 14 cities. Another tip for using Uber: when you see the price surging, just wait a few minutes. It will eventually fall back down.

There's a new service called "Solve" available at 500 airports world wide and will act as your airport concierge when traveling. They will meet you at the front door, walk you through security and customs, and will get you to your connection in time. It's $290 per visit, or $145 each for two. Johnny says he wouldn't use it for departures, just arrival and transferring. That's where it's worth the money. But Leo says it can add up from airport to airport.

In the US, get Precheck, Global Entry or Clear.

Johnny Jet says never to drink the tap water on an airplane. 1/3 often fail the standards for water safety. Always choose unopened bottles of water. Flight attendants don't drink the water, and neither should you. Carry an empty bottle of water and fill it up from the water fountain. Or freeze a bottle of water and bring it. TSA will let you bring it along.
