Cricket has an old iPad and wants to know if she needs to upgrade to a new one or if she can upgrade to iOS 8. Leo says that everything from the iPad 2 and newer can run iOS 8 and it should run fine. Should she buy a new one though? Leo says not really. Apple is having issues selling iPads now because people just don't feel it necessary to buy a new one once they buy one. Sure, she can get a new one if she wants, but she doesn't need to. She should just go into settings and tap on Software Update.
Steve has an old iPad 2 and it's slowing down a lot. Leo says that for an iPad 2 running iOS 8, the problem is that the demands on the iPad have gotten harder and it's not keeping up well. He could try resetting it and wiping out everything. But that may not help with the current iOS 8. The only real sure fix is to upgrade to a new iPad.
Some say that iOS 9 is going to be a leaner, more efficient OS, so it may be worth waiting until then. But at the end the day, it may be time to get a new one. Steve can try starting over first to see if that'll help for now.
David has an old iPod running iOS 6. Will there be a new iPod coming soon? Leo does think so. He thinks that Apple is pretty much ending development of the iPod since so many are buying iPhones now.
David could still buy an iPhone and just not activate it. Leo suggests going to Gazelle and buying a used, unactivated iPhone 5 or 5S. Then he'll be able to run iOS 8, just like an iPod. Leo says another option is T-Mobile's unlimited texting and data plan that costs $30 a month and has about 100 minutes of talk time.
Corrine has an iPad Mini that she uses with Airplay and Apple TV. She upgraded to iOS 8, but she can't see it. Apparently there is a mirroring issue with the Mini after a recent update. Leo says it's important to also update her Apple TV when she updates her iPhone. If she does that, chances are, it'll work.
The chatroom also says she has to scroll deeper into the menu to see it. Leo says she can go into her contacts application in the Mac, merge all of her contact duplicates and it'll merge them on the next sync.
Jared is having a problem with his iPhone 5 since upgrading to iOS 8. Leo says there's no denying that the experience is worse under iOS 8. Apple is working on it, but unfortunately, he can't roll back to iOS 7. There are known Wi-Fi issues and there are workarounds.
Laxman has been trying to make new ringtones using iTunes, but they don't show up in iOS 6. Leo says that there was a problem in iOS 8 that it was deleting ringtones. But that's been fixed in the latest update, iOS 8.1.2. It's still possible to do ringtones in iTunes 12, but it's a long and involved process. Steve just replaced his Android phone with an iPhone 6 Plus for the camera. But his challenge is all the stuff he has in the cloud, and with Android it was so easy to share it. Leo says that Apple's philosophy is to limit users in order to keep them out of trouble.
Today's photo myth is about the iPhone camera app. People think it doesn't do much, but Chris says that with iOS 8 you can do quite a lot and Chris uses it a lot. In the edit feature, there's a dial icon that gives you light, color, and b/w conversion. You can also drill down into adjustments and get exposure, white balance, and other features like saturation, color, and cast. It's giving you professional control that Chris really likes. And it's non destructive, so it doesn't change the original image.
Apple released OS X Yosemite and iOS 8 earlier this month. While the new operating systems bring a lot of new features, it's always a wise idea to wait so that bugs can be fixed and apps can be updated for it. But how will you know if the apps you use have been updated for OS X Yosemite or iOS 8? Fortunately, there's a website that keeps track of it all -- RoaringApps.com.
Byron's internet radio cuts out when he's listening on his iPhone running iOS 8.1. Leo says that intermittent Wi-Fi has plagued iOS for years, and Leo says that the nature of the beast is to have drop outs. But since iOS 7 it's really been a big problem. Leo says that Apple must be doing something odd because it's a common complaint.
Wi-Fi can often be promiscuous and can jump from access point to access point, dropping the signal. It could be the metal cases causing the problem. Byron can reset or update the firmware of the router. That could help, but the fix is elusive.
