Perry has a NetGear C6900 modem/router and it just drops out for several seconds from time to time. Leo says that routers and cable modems do wear out over time, and if he gets a lot of drop outs, it could be time to replace it. But Perry's router is only six months old, so that shouldn't be happening. Leo says he could try updating the firmware. PadreSJ says that the NetGear Combo units start having memory issues that cause server busy errors. Perry should go into his settings to find the logs and see if he is getting errors like that.
Dave's cable modem is failing, so he's looking to get a new one. Is the Arris modem good? Leo says absolutely, but he'll want to be sure to use one supported by his ISP. Leo uses the Arris Surfboard 6183 DOCSIS III modem. It's the fastest protocol. The Wirecutter has a pretty good listing of the cable modems that are available and they like it.
JC was looking for a new router to get some more advanced networking features, such as VPN and VLAN. He found the Netgear AC1750 with VPN support for $130. He found out that the VPN support also supports DDNS, which can be used for free as long as you go in every 30 days and click the link to renew it. You could also pay $50 a year for it. He was paying $45 a month for static IP addresses along with the necessary equipment and taxes to have it in his house.
David is trying to put his router into bridge mode, but he's having issues doing it. Leo says that if he's using the cable router and modem, they may have disabled the router protocol that would do that. The chatroom agrees. He can't do that with an AT&T UVerse modem. It just won't let him have his own router.
Leo says David is better off going with Spectrum and buying his own DOCSIS 3 modem. Then he can do it himself and have more freedom. UVerse is very strict because of QoS.
Robert got a new modem and now he has a random disconnect problem. He then can't get on the internet. Leo says that it could be that Robert is having issues with the router in the modem. He should go into the settings and make sure to turn off the router option. It could be running into competing routers. Leo says that the ISP could be changing the settings remotely as well. That's why Leo advises buying his own DOCSIS III modem. Another thing to do is check the network settings to see if his computer is configured to act as a router. If so, that would point to malware.
Steve got caught up in the terrible handover from Verizon FIOS to Frontier. He cancelled his account and has decided to go with Time Warner Cable. Leo says that's the good news, that he has an alternative. All too often there's a virtual monopoly between cable providers in the area.
Cam has an Arris Wi-Fi router hardwired into his computer, but he can't modify the settings. Leo says he should be able to. He should call the cable company and ask them for the password to access the router. Or, instead of using their router, ask them what third party routers they will support and he can buy his own. He'll want a DOCSIS III.

Michael would like to get a DOCSIS III modem and Leo says to be sure this his cable company enables it on their end when he does. He's also going to want to have a router that can support it, and Leo likes the Asus line. These are DDWRT compatible, and will protect him from the router bug that has hit lately. He should definitely get a good router. It'll be more expensive, but it's worth it.
Rob just moved and has a new cable provider. He works from home and has issues losing connectivity to his work using VPN. Leo says that the provider probably provides the modem. He should ask for DOCSIS III service. That will be more reliable and faster. Buying his own DOCSIS III modem will be newer and will save him money. Rob should ask them what DOCSIS III modems they support and buy his own. Another issue could be his router. Rebooting the router can clear out any bad issues. Routers do need to be replaced from time to time.
