As with many other maps sites and applications, Nokia's HERE Maps lets you search for places and get turn-by-turn directions. It has walking, driving, and public transit directions, live traffic information, weather, and more. But what sets it apart from a lot of the other maps sites and apps is its ability to cache maps for offline use. If you're heading to another country or a place where you have little or no cell signal, this is an important feature. Even if you're without cellular data or Wi-Fi, it's still possible to use GPS to see where you are and get directions to where you're going.
Once you download the HERE app for iOS, Android, or Windows Phone, you'll create a free HERE account or login with Facebook. Then you can tap "Download maps" from the side menu and select the country and region you'd like to download. This will take up quite a bit of space depending on how big the area is that you'd like to download -- for instance, the whole USA is 4.5 GB. But once you have it downloaded, you'll be able to navigate anywhere in that area without having to rely on the internet.
Nokia's HERE Maps are free to download and use online.
