There have now been two lawsuits between Apple and Samsung. The first was in trade dress, or the "look and feel" of the phone. The jury awarded Apple over $1 billion, siding with Apple that Samsung stole the design. In this most recent lawsuit, the jury wasn't as much in favor of Apple. They awarded Apple $119 million, which fell short of the $2.2 billion Apple was seeking. The jury also found that Apple infringed on one of Samsung's patents, and gave Samsung $158,400. The jury goes back to work on Monday though because they may have apparently made a mistake, but Leo doesn't expect that to change the ruling significantly.
Leo recommends the book "Dogfight" by Fred Vogelstein, which is all about the war between Apple and Google. Toward the end of the book, Fred wrote that Apple knew that the patent lawsuits were somewhat without merit. But they felt like the law is there to be used, because Samsung was getting so successful.
Leo isn't a big fan of the Samsung phones, but they do sell very well, and it's probably because Samsung spends billions every year in marketing. Leo prefers the HTC One and the Motorola Moto X if you're looking for something simpler and cleaner. Samsung loads a lot of "junk" software on its phones. It is possible to get Google editions of the Samsung phones, which are free of that extra software, directly from Google in the Google Play store.
